Titles and Title Modifiers -- IT9001

Titles

Titles for every paid and unpaid position an employee holds are displayed on the IT9001 Appointments screen.

Each paid position has a specific title that is assigned at the time the position is created/classified. When an employee is hired, the title and other master data are pulled into the employee’s record in SAP. A title modifier is not part of master data but can be added to an employee’s appointment on IT9001.

Unlike paid positions, unpaid positions are not assigned master data, so they do not have pre-assigned titles. In the Unpaid Positions section of IT9001, the title field is an open text field and whatever is entered will appear in the online employee directory. Therefore, it is important to enter a descriptive title in the title field. For example, enter “museum docent” rather than “volunteer,” or “cell tower technician” rather than “affiliate.” (To prevent the employee from appearing in the directory, enter NL in the DO field -- NL indicates Not Listed.)

Title Modifiers

In rare instances, a title needs to be modified to include additional information. In these instances, a title modifier can be added next to the title field on the IT9001 screen. There are only two title modifiers that apply to paid positions are 1- Acting and 2 - Interim. Most title modifiers are used to identify specific characteristics of unpaid faculty positions.

For Adjunct Faculty positions, a title modifier is crucial for properly provisioning services. A title modifier "3" (indicating "Adjunct") must be entered on IT9001 on the unpaid position line to initiate the provisioning of faculty services.
For example: On an adjunct faculty position, when title modifier code “3” is entered and the title “Faculty” is typed into the IT9001 screen, the resulting “Adjunct Faculty” is properly provisioned as faculty. If these fields are incorrectly entered -- the title modifier code field is left blank and the open title text field is entered as “Adjunct Faculty” -- the person will be provisioned as an affiliate/volunteer because the title modifier code is missing.
